R31- Final radio show- arts hero

My radio show

This is my final radio show which I have produced as part of my arts ward. It has taught me skills which I will be able to transfer in many aspects of work as well as life. I have learned how to be organised in terms of planning a newscast and always being prepared. Also, I learned how to edit my audio on Adobe and how to import vox pops, controlling sound levels. It has given me the confidence to produce an effective vox pop and be able to deal with negative responses.

Now that I have developed these skills I will use them in my own radio newscast, by always being prepared with questions, organising myself and my group to always be aware of current affairs in our local area also I will incorporate the learnt presentation skills such as voice projection and tone of voices while recording future interviews/vox pops.

R29- Recording my show

Recording my show

On the 23rd of November, as part of my arts award I recorded the speech for which I planned to present in my final radio show. The show is about my favourite arts hero, our task was to create a 15-30 show including vox pops, jingles, 3 songs from my chosen arts hero as well as speech. I was able to familiarise myself with the radio technology in the studio room also speak into a microphone as if I'm on air. This enabled me to gain an in-depth understating of how pre-recorded radio shows are run.

After I finished my speech, I needed to edit my speech so that it may resemble to storyboard also so I can take out or add in any extra audio which is needed for the show. I used Adobe to edit my speech and create my overall radio show which R21 came in use as I learnt how to utilise certain features to my advantage.

This has taught me effective skills in delivering news/speech, also first hand experience at editing sound which will be useful for my own group newscast. I will make sure that I implement all these learned skills as it will be useful in creating a good radio newscast which will hopefully grab the attention of my target audience.

R25- Planning a radio show

Here is a plan of what I will be talking about in my radio show. My task was to make a script of all the things I wish to include about my arts hero, therefore I made a storyboard to clearly show what and when I will be saying and which songs I will be playing.

I have learnt that when producing a pre-recorded show you need to be organised in what you will be saying also the things you will include. Therefore when I am planning my newscast with my group I will need to draw a plan of all the things I will specifically be saying and which song/sound I will have as my bed and possible sound effects I wish to include. I have also learnt that when presenting a live show, it is better to not have a word for word plan as it can come across as monotone but you still need to be prepared in terms of ideas and things to be mentioned.

R21- Vox pop- Arts Award

Arts Award- Vox pop, Victoria

This experience has taught me how to conduct an effective vox pop.

I learnt that in order to gain useful information that is needed for research, I first need to draw up a plan about what it is that I want to find out and then list a set of open ended questions which will allow my audience to articulate their thoughts about the subject. Moreover, I learnt useful, professional skills on how to approach my audience, I always needed to be smiling. Additionally, I learnt that when a person refuses to answer, I should always remain positive and still greet them in a professional and friendly manner.

R4- Arts award: Wk 2- (video)

Arts award

I decided to record all the activities.

Here is evidence of post-production:

Movie maker is a quick and reliable software to use because it has unique features such as special effects, transitions and titles and credits which is a great help to make my final product. Another feature of movie maker is it compresses all my components used to one media file, this is ideal because it’s easy to share across social networking sites also movie maker is easy to edit and if you make a mistake you can go back and re-edit, this is before you compress the file whereas with the other files you cannot edit or go back and edit. Another reason why I have chosen to use Movie maker is because it accepts a wide range of formats for example: AVI, WMV, and WAV, it is compatible to many formats therefore I did not have to convert any files.

Windows movie maker is a stable software meaning this will not crash nor will it cause any virus, this is beneficial because it’s a reliable source where you can edit and put together a piece together with no hassle. If you use any other software it will be longer to set up and most likely costly.

R3- Arts award: Wk 2

Arts award

Yesterday (02.10.14) was week 2 but week 1 for my bronze arts award.
I recorded majority of the evening and spent the night editing and re-editing. (video in the next post)

I met another awesome and lively bunch- they’re hilarious.
My task was to, again pair up and research on the internet about my partners’ arts hero/heroine.
After doing so, I had to come up with a few studio-like questions for an interview that was recorded and aired on the radio channel- Reprezent. I had to put myself in my hero’s position (I chose Bruno Mars) and had to answer the questions which were unknown to me as Bruno Mars in the studio- just 5 minutes of pretend fame, if you like. Also I had to play the role of the interviewer. Before any of the broadcasting and interviewing we had to learn how to operate a studio and the software used at the Reprezent studio which is called Miriad. I learnt various keywords like ‘queue’ ‘bed’ ‘jingle’ and ‘cart’ and had to put my knowledge of operating a studio to good use whilst interviewing my pretend 'celebrity' guest.

Not only did this experience teach me how to use faders and the software, it also taught me how to project my voice and to speak confidently. Moreover, I learnt various interviewing skills from both sides- the interviewer and the interviewee. In addition, I learnt the etiquettes of being in a studio room, the dos and don'ts (and most importantly the consequences ha-ha) for example: when the show is on live, there must be no noise at all this is because any sound detected can be picked up my the microphones and aired which is not what we want. This all contributes to my understanding of radio, therefore when I make my own newscasts I can apply some of these skills.

R2- Arts award: Wk 1 Intro to radio

Arts award (silver)

I seized and amazing opportunity to work alongside producers, presenters and managers of a local radio station- Reprezent 107.3 FM. Reprezent is a local radio station aimed at the youth of East London, allowing them easy access to a wide range of music whilst on their way to school, in the car or even at home with family.

The project I am involved in is an arts award credited course, which runs every Wednesday/Thursday in the 3 Mills studio for young people willing to discover more of the radio industry. This is a rare occasion as not many radio studios provide such service. Over the few months, I will be working in a group producing, editing, and hosting parts of the radio show. Also independently in research.

On Monday- which was the introductory lesson I had the opportunity to explore the different equipment used in a radio studio and find out what they do and how they function- which was pretty cool. Also how to change volumes, change music songs (and even cough on air) without the audience knowing the changes taking place. Technology eh?

After meeting and greeting my group I partnered up with a lovely girl who I learned a lot about and had to do my own 60 second introduction about the girl I just met in the studio using the fancy microphones which was broadcasting on the show.

Unfortunately, I let the excitement and thrill get the best of me and forgot to take pictures whilst in the studio with an awesome bunch of people. I am looking forward to this experience and creating a network with a cool radio station ‘representing’ a part of my identity.

The adventure must go on!

This will help me develop my skills in radio and how the technology in radio works, moreover I will learn various interview skills which will be useful for my work as a group as well as individually.
